Hi Tony and All
This talk of rods and shad remind me of the time I took a fellow from the USA who wanted to fish shad.
He had a bamboo rod his Grandfather had given him with the instructions that he was to catch one fish on it and they put it up in a place of honour.
I said since we were using cone head flies, the river was fast and the shad strong maybe he should put that rod away and we would go where he could catch a trout for the last fish on the rod. He said his Grandfather had caught many fish with the rod which he was quite sure were bigger than any shad in this river. He had been warned so down to the river we went.
After a couple of casts a big one took the fly. The lad knew even less about playing a fish than he did about rods - which was little enough. He tried to horse the fish in - the rod bent in a hoop - and the shad cutting about. Next thing there was a load bang - the rod flew into kindlings and he had the butt in his hand.
How will I explain this to Grandpap - he said.
Easy I answered - tell him it died in battle.
Probably still pieces of it in the Annapolis yet.
At least he had the Butt to put over the fireplace.
Have a nice day
Paul
