Microwave Dying Step by Step
« on: January 10, 11:50AM »
Well guys I did some PB a light blue for some more streamers and bucktails for spring and I did a SBS as I went

1-  wash the materials with a light soft dish  soap (dawn)  and let Soak the materials you want to dye ahead of time  these I  soaked over night.  Rinse all soap before adding to dye Bath

2-  I used Kingfisher Blue dye to get the light color I was looking for and added 1/4 of a teaspoon to a 2 cups of warm water and 1/2 cup vinegar to lock the dyes  stir and  mix .

3-   Add material to dye bath making sure all of the material is covered

4-  Cover in Kling wrap  and poke 4 holes in it with toothpick.  Place in microwave on high heat for 1 minute  remove and stir.  You can repeat this  sequence for approx 3 tries before the material comes saturated with your color.  Let cool between  as to not over cook the material.  Be careful of steam while removing kling wrap

5-  Rinse all of the dye from  material in warm water and make sure its the color your looking for

6-  Hang to dry.  From start to finish cleaned up and hanging you can do it easy in 10 minutes.  Mama wouldn't even know unless you spill the dye which your in trouble either way.  Once the vinegar is added  its harder to clean up.      Also if your  concerned off colored fingers I recommend wearing rubber gloves

The colors are really endless so if you have  problems buying that color your looking for try playing with the dyes to match what it

The light yellow one in the pic was done with 5 paks of  Koolaid  and the brighter one was 1/2 tsp of dye.    I find it soo much easier personally   I will be playing with this more this spring  and will start recording the colors I get from = amounts of dye so I can reproduce them close each time.

I've only dyed feathers a couple times and used the microwave trick and Kool-aid.  I was actually surprised how easy it was to do and that it actually worked, LOL!!

This mornings dye bath,  I would still  like to offer a dye / tie or fish day to the members here.  It will be much easier now that the days are getting nicer.  We will have to see what we can come up with over the next  few weeks to make it happen.
