Since  June 1 is the start of salmon season here in parts of  Atlantic Canada I  opted for one of the greater series of salmon flies ever designed in our area.  These flies are world renowned for both being artistic as well as being very productive.  There are many variations of the "RAT" and most  have been proven quite productive over the years.    The  RAT stands for  Roy Angus Thompson who is credited with this tying style around 1911.  lets  see what the crew at here can come up with for rats in  June!!

Few mistakes but happy with my first attempt.

Tag-silver tinsel
Tail- peacock sword
Body- orange floss, don't have rusty orange yet
Rib- silver tinsel
Wing- black calf tail. Like it a little ruffled looking
Collar- grizzly hackle (folded)
Thorax, peacock herl applied thick. Still a bit hard to see it but will improve here down the road.
Spine- if that's what it's called I used pheasant tippet here.

Have to pick up a couple salmon hooks and give one a try, never tied on a salmon hook before.

Silver  Rat is for sure a  fly  worth carrying in your  box.  Another great thing to note is not all salmon flies need to be 3 / 0.  Here is  a great summer version of the Silver Rat.

Here is a RAT thats been a little funked up. I came up with this idea after searching the net for various RAT patterns. Having always liked the colour combination of Blues and Chartreuse, I thought this might make a good colour selection for off coloured water.
