Tim'z Trout boxes
« on: January 02, 11:21PM »
Mikes winter project seemed like a great idea so I thought I would start on mine as well.  My problem is that I collect fly boxes like they were baseball cards.

Luckly there are many flies that are still in good enough shape to use another year but this might take awhile.......

Here's the first box done.

Black, olive, and Claret seal fur buggers, 8's &10's nymph
Black Woolly Buggers w/ orange cone, 8s nymph
Olive Woolly Buggers, 10's & 12's nymph

Dark Montreals, 8's & 10's sprout
Yellow Woolly Worms, 8's sprout & Bartlett

Going fishing with you would sound something like visiting the App Store. " There's a app(box) for that. Lol. Nice to have a different box for each pattern of fly. I fear being box poor when I am able to tie on my own. Nice flies too man can't wait to be able to sit down and restock myself.

Very nice Tim! I see we suffer a similar kind of fly box affiction(or addiction)!

It won't take you long Speckles.  I've watched a half a dozen guys on here go from beginners to masterful tiers in no time.  Keep posting flies and asking questions and you will make great progress.

You do realize that having that many fly boxes puts you into the slightly disturbed category ;) :P :P
Alas...... I guess myself and many others are right there with you 8) ;D
Need to start tying myself, just no ambition........

Great ties man!

and i thought going to the river with 6 or 7 boxes was bad...how do you decide which box to take on any trip...i am trying to get it down to 1 or 2 so i don't strain my back lugging gear around on a trip

Mike has it dead on.

There are several general trout boxes there that I carry most of the season.
A box of big trout lake trolling streamers.
A box of small to medium casting streamers.
A spring hatch box and a summer hatch box
Two general combination dry fly/nymph boxes that I tend to carry when I'm on water that I don't know well.
Two striper boxes
Three low water salmon wet fly boxes and two high water salmon wet fly boxes
A box of buck bugs and bombers
And a box of small stuff 18-22s
I also have a couple of dedicated boxes for flies that I use/loose a lot, Buggers, Zuddlers, Montreals, yellow wooly worms etc. They stay in the truck and I use them to restock the others.

I keep a rubbermaid container and sort my chest pack based on the day.  I usually only carry four boxes with me.

To be honest it is more a survival technique to get through the winter, by about mid summer I am pretty well fishing out of one general box of flies that has an assortment of my favorite patterns.

Generally everything comes with me but I will usually pick from what I bring as I gear up at my destination. Don't have a giant selection but this is how I divvy them up for now. For really early in the salt I usually take just this box. There are flies in other boxes that I will pick from and bring in another box but usually don't stray from the shrimp anyway. This box comes on all trips to fresh water. There are a few in here I would fish salt also. and these are with me all season in fresh. All I have for terrestrials but that will change. and these are all I have for salmon but I spend most time chasing trout anyway.

What part of Fla. to you stay in Murray? I have access to a winter home in Ft. Meyers and would like to fish if I make it there some day.

Started cleaning up the next box tonight.  Probably have to add a dozen or so of flies to fill this one up.  This is my small streamer box, size 6 and down.

and a couple of flies that came off the vise tonight.
