Decided to create this topic heading to put all the ties I didn't follow a known pattern for, but instead used an abundance of images and material uses seen here and applying what i learned so far to come up with a few flies to throw at trout, which is why I tie them. All comments welcome.

That has the looks of Rpens,  "Irish style"  flies....   You  will like that one I have no doubts...
: Re: Wet speckles.
: Speckles May 28, 10:17AM
Thanks! I do like this type of fly(many of them with rpen's style) and working on getting the effect. With more material and colors and time, his are some I will attempt no doubt. There are a lot of his I have taken screen shots of and have on my camera roll so they are easier to access. Keep em comin Roland.

Two steps forward , one step back. Thanks Gary. I notice how much easier things are to do and occasionally I surprise myself with something. Still so much to learn but lookin forward to it.
Here's another something .

Guess if I could give it a name I would call it orange creamsicle. Dubbing, calf hair, few white deer hairs, white hackle, orange under hackle fibres.

All hackle . Brown ( longer from back to front) saddle badger up front. Black crystal flash body.  Orange floss tag.

Turned out messy but the reason I keep plugging away at these is to figure some stuff out to help get a cleaner look. A few things clicked for me with this attempt but like learning to juggle chainsaws, I need to sleep on it. Looking forward to tonites session to see if it pans out.

I based this on addicted to vise's double wing akroyd. This is only a size 4 Mustad so not enough room to spread things out. This was a huge challenge for me to complete without scrapping the idea of trying it, but it seems to look ok so I might throw it in a box and see if it turns any tails someday.

Not sure if this is a wet or could pass as a nymph. It's not weighted but that could happen. Pretty simple tie but I like how I did on this one.

: Re: Wet speckles.
: raven4ns September 30, 08:06AM
Speckles, the reason the deer hair was so difficult to spin was it is likely the wrong deerhair. Try to get deerhair around the belly region right where it goes from brown to white or look for deer hair that has a hollow look to it, that will spin much better. The deer hair you used would in all likelihood come from further up the back and is stiffer. It would be better for tails, wings etc. I hope this might be of some use to you.
: Re: Wet speckles.
: Speckles September 30, 09:01AM
Thanks bud. I have used some very nice hair. I had one patch specifically that would have been soft enough to wear if it was big enough and it spun like an old Dodge steering wheel. The dyed stuff I have now is pretty stiff and a bit brittle but low quality and you get what ya pay for it seems. There is a supplier of dyed hair in NFLD who has an online catalog and he has what looks like whatever you want in deer hair. My next patches of colored hair will come from there eventually. Prices seem reasonable and basically all colors you can imagine.

Shrimp bug test pattern. I like the concept but need to work at it a bit more . Lots of material to manage at one time so need to plan them out a little more to get a cleaner look. This took me forever and made a mess of it discovering all the way. The eyes are bug sticks so no added weight and the addition of red was me thinking of what makes a GP shine. Hope I can come up with a clean version of this one.

Still fiddling with shrimps. As I have said most of my trout fishing success is had in salt water and on an orange shrimp. Trying to create something that is mine and will work without a doubt. Every pattern has been put through this same test. A bit premature but if this catches anything it will be known as a South Cove Special.

Something I came up with fiddling around waiting on overtime. I just want to put this in front of something to see if  it will fish. This one will serve as a trout fly with the added copper wire pre-finish on the head. How does rock lobster sound?

nicely done...are these flies all coated with UV epoxy?  they seem to shine in the photos
: Re: Wet speckles.
: Speckles October 31, 03:17PM
Nope, but I'm hoping to get my hands on a bit of diamond coat and flex coat epoxies . I would prefer less shine and in most cases, less hardening. I like how layering with translucent threads allows some more realistic appearance. The soft material added to it for the attractive movement seems a nice combo. Thanks Andrew!! On these I simply used head cement . Don't like the hardness or clarity though.

very cool and realistic, from what i have seen with the UV epoxy you will lke the results.
: Re: Wet speckles.
: Speckles October 31, 10:17PM
I think so too Andrew , lots of products out there but this is one I'm checking into. From a graphic design company and fly fisher and possibly comes in colors as the pics are some of the things this guy is creating. I'm no artist but I still look forward to creating lifelike flies, so this or something similar is gonna get me pointed in the direction I been wanting to go since I started tying. Not to mention the price some of these flies are getting sold for.

Ok yep this is definitely the company I'm lookin for. www.deercreek.co.uk (http://www.deercreek.co.uk) haven't looked through here much yet but there is a type of colouring marker that is available for colouring tying threads before adding resins. Guess it doesn't bleed or something.

If you want to save yourself some money check out e-bay for the UV light to do the curing.  I have been using the loon thin build stuff and instead of paying the 40 bucks for the Loon brand light I went on e-bay and got one delivered for about $10 that works perfectly.
: Re: Wet speckles.
: Speckles November 01, 08:57AM
Thanks Jeff. For sure good to have that option when ordering the more pricey items from online retailer anyway. So far I have done well supporting local or near local , but I'm like a rabbit when it comes to picking the easy route. Click.
: Re: Wet speckles.
: Speckles November 02, 10:21AM
Well Andrew, the resin won't help me out that much yet, but a lot more trial and much more error should get me producing some nice realistics. Be stocking up on lots of different thread profiles and other build up material for the parts that need to be shaped with blades and files, some permanent markers that won't run when coated, curved hooks, etc. Almost don't even care if I get to fish them ,it has become like a separate need at this point. The shot's been fired now, just have to will it as close to the target in flight as I can

A variant because I have no quill feathers to form the wing. One of the flies I will be using in the 'Anything Goes Swap' if it is still open.

It's clear what I meant to happen and didn't achieve . Think there must be a better quality of quill for this . The blue quill is real nice to manipulate but the white is nappy .

: Re: Wet speckles.

Just a note on the feather quills. I bought the white at Walmart , not a great idea likely but was packaged as tying material by a company that supplies tying material. The quality was acceptable for its intended use but quill tips were in rough shape and re attachment was poor to good.  The blue quills I used here I cut off a pair of my daughters earrings and when the quill was separated you could really see the bond between as it peeled apart. They reattached to each other like magnets almost on their own. Great quality I thought for wing construction. I wonder if a place like Claire's or Ardene , since they seem to have good access to all things feather of great quality, would be interested to market them as craft material !!!

Another version of my favorite salt water fly. Many of the shrimp or lobster I seen when I fished them were riddled with patches of dark spots so trying for the fresh uncooked look.

Though this one does have a foam shell back, there is a good lump of lead underneath, which I'm hoping will make it a suspension wet. Either way no chance of it floating.

Olive wooly bugger. Had the cone head put aside and forgot to install it so used copper wire to weight the head and coated with clear over black to get something of an eye. Creative recovery I guess but it has a bit of weight at least so not waste of time.
